I am an Indonesian living in Malaysia. I am not here to start ruckus or whatever. I love Indonesia and it is not my intention to defend Malaysia. however what is right must be put forward. I’ve familiarized myself with both country since I’ve lived in both so I am quite realize how the issue is handled between both country.
We, Indonesian often condemn Malaysia because Nordin Mat top is a Malaysian but little we try to realize that his religious teacher who influence him conducting terrorism is Indonesian who open up sekolah pondok in Malaysia.
Then talking about Batik, Malaysian Batik is completely different from Indonesian Batik, Both have different aesthetic value and to me who has been familiarized with both Indonesian and Malaysian Batik can easily tell them apart. “oh this one is Batik Indonesia” that one is Batik Malaysia. I’ve lived in both country so I know.
About Terang Bulan, do you guys know that the music actually came way before Indonesia which is from Hawaii folk song? If we claim that Malaysia steal our music, does it mean we steal Hawaii’s music? I rather think that since the world is connected by globalisation, this sort of thing is actually unconciously being transferred and amalgamated into a culture that the mix of it might form another culture in a different way. That’s why I won’t call Indonesian a stealer nor Malaysian a stealer.
for Keris, maybe history shows it that it comes much earlia from Indonesia but don’t forget that t has been widely used also in Malaysia from long time before, which has dated hundred years back, maybe not as long as Indonesia. but as my previous point – it’s inivetable that some values are transferred and because it’s so very very widely used it has been glued and amalgamated to the Malay culture. To me Keris is something that both country, Indonesia and Malaysia can familiarize to because they are widely accepted to be their own. not because one party want to steal but because eversince long the granpa grandma, etc has been using it as tradition.
about sipadan ligitan don’t we go to the international court for decision? both country use lawyer to defend their claim and their luck that decision comes to them. do you know about the island conflict between singapore and malaysia over pulau batu putih? the pulau has been under malaysia sovereignty for very long time but in the end the court decided that it belongs to singapue. the malaysia are frustrated of course. but since both have agreed to bring the issue to international court of justice and the court has give the decision after hearing both argument, they accepted. just like the sipadan ligitan case both country has agreed to be bound by the court so they bring to the court. but why is when we lose the proceeding we create ruckus? I don’t see such ruckus happening between Singapore and Malaysia. with claim that singapore is a stealer or whatsoever. mostly if they voice the frustration they talk academically looking at the case, and court’s reasoning. but have we read the case and read about it? I’ve read it and there are part I accept and parts that I don’t but at least I make attempt to understand the case not listen to propaganda brought by media and start condemning others without ground
I don’t really know about other claim. but about tari pendet etc there are something in above list that I asked to my Malaysian friends whether they know about it, but mostly don’t know what is Tarian Pendet until the recent conflict of culture claiming by Indonesian media surfaced.
I’ve watched the video by national geographic (which is done by the national geographic crew themselves there is no involvement by Malaysian government). and about the tari pendet said to be claimed by Malaysian in other video it is from the wayang kulit, Malaysian used to perform few dances they claim to be Malaysian and I never see them performing tarian pendet. the tarian pendet in the video is from wayang kulit. about the claim of wayang kulit I can’t talk much since I don’t know.
basically I see all this in terms of , this must be because lots of same values, it is just differences of county and borders, that some values are transferred and amalgamated into other culture though it is not rightly same (example being we call them both batik but we can see that indonesia and malaysian batik are very very very different in style and aesthetic value).
I support the campaign of jati diri bangsa, we have to be more strong and show the world our culture but at the same time I don’t support the campaign to be added with condemnation to Malaysia since most are because solely on emotion but not open to see the reality of things. we are too engrossed with media who sparks out this issue without fairness.
we should be strong so the world will see that not only the batik keris etc thing are exclusive to malaysia only but their use and history are prevalent in our country too. that should be our goal. not downright condemning. we should improve our jati diri and to me condemning others without considering the reality and being victim of controversial media is not good for our jatidiri. we must wok hard and improve ourself. that’s what I want to see. sometimes I see my own people who shout and scream and condemn people, burn things, because of anger, but that’s all they are doing, they do nothing to improve themselve. let’s change to the better and improve ourself and do do such reckless thing anymore.
mengembalikan jati diri bangsa! with the right move.
I’ll definitely support that, with the right move.
please approve this comment. let us discuss how to have our jati diri with fairness and justice
